Art in Translation is a digital catalogue series featuring three art exhibitions associated with Bodies in Translation: Age and Creativity, Phantom, stills & vibrations, and Cripping the Arts Symposium 2019. Each digital catalogue includes text, audio, and photographic documentation of the exhibition.

Hidden explores intergenerational trauma [hauntology], isolation and lived experiences of Black artists with hidden disabilities. What is hidden is kept concealed, and what is concealed is done to hide our uniqueness.

The Anishinaabe meaning of “Sagatay” roughly translates to “a new beginning”, which is what we strive for in this show that marks a new moment for us as artists who are still grappling with trauma and loss but looking forward to a new horizon with hope.

Is that a mushroom, or her “peen”? Is that a pile of leaves or a pile of bones? Is that the “trunk” of the body? Birdie queers the human body by combining it with forms from nature to create what she calls “soft body horror”—a mythology of monsters that describe her story.

Undeliverable is a continuation of artist Carmen Papalia’s curatorial practice. Envisioning curation as a form of care, the exhibition brings together six artists from the Mad, Deaf and disability community, to re-envision the museum around the demands and desires of the disabled body/mind.

In this performance and sound installation, Lara Kramer created an immersive experience of the former Pelican Lake Indian Residential School, where three generations of her family attended.

Bodies in Translation: Age and Creativity featured work by aging artists who wittingly, subversively, subtly, whimsically, intimately, and culturally animate the particular interaction between aging bodies and the artistic process.

Artist Michel Dumont­ reflects on his sculptures and performance at the Outliers on Tour exhibition. Dumont’s work engages how colonial oppression both shatters and re-creates his relationships to his past, present, and future as the son of an Indian Day School survivor and as a queer Métis two-spirit artist.

Deaf Interiors is a multidisciplinary online exhibition showcasing the culminating work of a three-month online incubator with six Deaf Canadian artists that took place at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. The artists gathered online with facilitators to share stories, generate ideas, and create work that demonstrates the interior world of Deaf culture, activism and human connection.

Into the Light: Eugenics and Education in Southern Ontario examines local histories and ongoing legacies of racial “betterment” thinking in Southern Ontario that de-humanized and disappeared those who did not fit the normative middle-class lives of white, able-bodied settlers.

Ancestral Mindscapes is an autobiographical collaboration using video, sound and photography to explore the intersection of madness, indigeneity, colonialism, environmental destruction and the healing power of nature.

In Constructed Identities, Persimmon Blackbridge uses mixed media wood carving with found objects to question how disability is framed as a fracturing of ordinary life rather than a normal, expected part of it.
